Boniface VIII (may 1, 1297 – aug 18, 1303)
Description:
He deemed all secular people enemies of the clergy and declared papacy a universal rule, more important than any secular one. The pope was supposed to substitute Christ on Earth.
His ambitions were stifled, however, after a conflict with the French king, Philip IV the Fair, who imprisoned the pope. Shortly thereafter the pope died in captivity.
