The Reformation (jan 1, 1517 – jan 1, 1640)
Description:
1517 - 1640 AD
In the years leading up to the Reformation, Christianity was changing as was Western Europe.
There was an emergence of nation states (the majority of the nation shares the same culture and is aware of it).
Role of the Pope was becoming questionable and some Christian leaders were questioning his authority and the Church's teachings.
Christian leaders Martin Luther, Ulrich Zwingili, John Calvin and Henry VIII aimed to reform the abuses which weakened the Church. They looked to scripture to support their teachings about the sacraments, liturgy and ministry.
Pope Paul III called the Council of Trent a number of times between 1545 and 1563 in an attempt to combat the effect of the reformation.
This led to the renewal of the Catholic Church, corrected many errors of the reformers and reaffirmed the Church's teachings.
