The Struggle over the Mexican Identity (jan 1, 1824 – jan 1, 1910)

Description:

Several people in Mexico struggle with the idea of patriotism and what it means to be Mexican. Many people argued that Catholicism was something that was imprinted in many Mexican's lives but was not Mexican, but Spanish and European. At the same time, you have a very heterogenous society that is filled with Africans, Mexican indigenous, European leaning Mestizos and everything in between. In many parts of Mexico, there is a supremacy of the European leaning Mestizos who implement governments in which Catholicism is very pervasive. While this new factor of life is present, it does not prove to be as oppressive as the inquisition as Catholicism is all that many in Mexico knew at this point. There is still a struggle with whether or not being Mexican should be conflated with being Christian. This conflict started during the Inquisition and in many ways continues to this day.
