The Spanish Inquisition dominant over Mexico (jan 1, 1571 – jan 1, 1820)
Description:
The Inquisition gains dominance over the territory of all of Mexico. The old gods are no longer worshipped openly although, much like in Spain, there were conversos however, in much fewer numbers. The religions of the Maya and the Aztecs were considered much more barbaric than the Abrahamic religions that were suppressed in Spain and, therefore, the indigenous people in Mexico were subject to the Spanish utilizing their own religious practices to identify them as lesser than Catholics. During this time, there was also the appearance of much more Mestizos that were almost guaranteed to be raised in the Catholic religion. The Inquisition dissipates in 1820, just before Mexico gains its independence from Spain in 1824. Depicted is indigenous people being burned at the stake by the Inquisition.
