Togoland Congress flexes muscles (jul 24, 1955 – nov 27, 1956)

Description:

Skinner pp. 162: Recognising the likelihood of [southern British Togoland would simply become part of the Trans-Volta Togoland Region of an independent Ghana, and would be governed according to a unitary constitution], the reunificationists had used the time between July and November 1956 to strengthen their relationships with the Gold Coast opposition parties, which opposed CPP plans for a unitary constitution. This process had begun as early as July 1955, when Antor had participated at a conference held in Kumasi by ‘Movements and Parties other than the CPP’. There he had signed a document entitled ‘Proposals for an Independent Gold Coast and Togoland’, which demanded nothing short of a federal constitution.137
