Investiture Controversy (mar 25, 1076 – dec 12, 1122)
Description:
German king Henry IV pposed pope Gregory VII in the investiture controversy - a conflict of church and state.
1077 - to keep his authority as a king he travels to Canossa, where the pope resides, to ask for his excommunication to be revoked.
1084 - Henry IV leads a campaign towards Rome and installs a new pope who declares him an emperor.
1122 - An agreement is reached during a synod, and a first concordat is signed.
