The American Party (Know-Nothing Party) (jul 25, 1844 – jul 17, 1860)
Description:
Founded in 1844, the American Party (originally called the Native American Party) was started as an anti-immigration anti-Catholic Party. They grew in response to the political vacuum left by the Whigs' dissolution. Being anti-Catholic--they believed that the clergy would use their influence for political reasons--they promoted the tribalism that sectionalism brought.
