Description:

supposed to last until 1940 but Allies declared war on Hitler a year earlier due to the Nazi invasion of Poland

the priorities of the plan were economic autarky and rearmament

They achieved these by:

Creating a managed economy with controls on labour supplies, prices, raw materials and foreign exchange

Setting production targets for private companies

Increasing production of key commodities eg iron, steel, chemicals

Encouraging research into ersatz products (substitutes) thereby reducing imports

The 4 year plan achieved autarky in food and vital raw materials
