On August 2, 1990, Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein ordered the invasion and occupation of Kuwait. American President George H.W. Bush ordered a ceasefire on February 28, 1991. On January 17, 1991, US-led air offensives bombed Iraqi defensives (known as Operation Desert Storm).
