Civil War (apr 12, 1861 – may 9, 1865)
Description:
The Civil War represents the culmination of decades of sectional division between the Northern states and the Southern states as a result of differences in opinion about the institution of slavery, among other things. It is ultimately as a result of this war that President Abraham Lincoln is able to to get the Emancipation Proclamation (which ended slavery in all states that seceded) and eventually the 13th amendment (which outlawed slavery across the nation). In addition, some 186,000 black soldiers would fight for the Union army. (Change: blacks are granted rights under the federal government for the first time in U.S. history)
