Cuban Missile Crisis (oct 14, 1962 – oct 28, 1962)
Description:
In 1959, Cuba became communist, the first nation in the western hemisphere to do so. The United States did not approve of this, and tensions with Cuba quickly escalated. In response to this, Cuban dictator Fidel Castro allowed the Soviet Union to set up nuclear missiles on the island, putting the entirity of the United States within the range of Soviet nukes. When the United States realized they were doing this, things almost escalated to full scale nuclear war. Fortunately, President Kennedy was able to meet with Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev and hammer out an agreement, which got the Soviets to remove their nukes, and in exchange the U.S. promised not to invade Cuba.
