Berlin Blockade (jun 24, 1948 – may 12, 1949)
Description:
In 1948, the Soviet Union, in response to the U.S. policy of containment, began a blockade of West Berlin, a small island of U.S. territory in the middle of Soviet-controlled East Germany. In response to this, President Truman organized one of the largest airlifts of all time, flying thousands of pounds of supplies to west Berlinners to sustain them during the blockade. When Stalin realized the blockade was not having the effect he intended it to, he lifted it.
