Spanish American War (apr 25, 1898 – aug 12, 1898)

Description:

The United States goes to war with Spain in support of Cuban rebels seeking independance from Spain, in accordance with the Monroe Doctrine. The United States also used the war to acquire the Phillipines from Spain as well, thus marking the beginning of U.S. imperialism. The United States would maintain control of the Philippines for years to come, even brutally suppressing a Filipino independance movement to do so. (Change: beginning of U.S. imperialist foreign policy) (Continuity: upholding the Monroe Doctrine, by keeping Europe out of the western hemisphere)
