Vietnam War (jan 1, 1955 – jan 1, 1975)
Description:
American involvement in the Vietnam War was one of the most controversial foreign policy decisions of the 20th century. The U.S. supported the authoritarian regime of Ngo Dinh Diem because he was not communist; however, Diem was oppressive and controversial in Vietnam. Despite the Gulf of Tonkin resolution to “take all necessary measures” against aggression towards Americans in Vietnam, the U.S. lost the war, which made it all the more controversial.
