2nd Wave of Immigration (dec 24, 1814 – dec 24, 1865)

Description:

Irish and German Immigrants come to America as a result of hardships in Europe, most notably the Irish potato blight that occurred from 1845-1849. They constituted much of the nation's non-agricultural labor supply, and were instrumental in large building projects such as the Erie Canal. These immigrants would experience discrimination as a result of their primarily being Catholics, who were constantly at odds with the Protestant beliefs of most Americans. On the western seaboard, Asian immigrants would settle in America, especially after receiving news of gold being found in California. The wave would end when the Civil War begins.
