Phillipines Campaign (dec 8, 1941 – may 8, 1942)

Description:

Japan invaded the phillipines and the United States came to their defense. The American and Filipino soldiers however suffered crushing losses. General McArthur surrendered to the Japanesee and fled to Australia. The Japanese who didn’t believe in surrender were surprised to find some 80,000 newly acquired POWs. The prisoners were led on an 80 mile death march suffering unimaginable cruelty and torture from the Japanese. They searched the prisoners for any Japanese items believing they were looted from their fallen comrades. The POWs were led to camp O’Donnell and then transported to Japan for forced labor. Some 15000 Filipinos and 500 Americans died on the march. The increased Filipino deaths were due to the Japanese hatred of what they believed to be an inferior race.
