British society and Women's rights (jan 1, 1918 – aug 1, 1920)
Description:
During the modern period, Women's suffrage was taking place in 1918. Within this, the fight for legalizatrion of homosexuality was still being fought for as well and wasn't legal until 1967. This being said, if you weren't a straight male, you had little to no rights at all. For someone like Orlando, finding self acceptance was challenging throughout this time. In the story, Orlando had self identification issues and battled between being a woman and/or a man and the sexual attractions of the same sex. While Orlando proclaimed the issues and the holdbacks that came with being a woman, he/she soon came to acceptance within herself. Virginia Woolf didn't let sexuality take over within the story to help showcase the equality of both male and female and how neither is of more importance. However, the detail she spent in describing the women in the story show that she had standards for the women's role in society.
