Description:
Standardized in construction but adapted to local materials, the Roman empire's success depended on its roads. Primarily built to move and support the military, to allow easy travel for civil servants and tax collectors. Merchants also used the roads and paid levies based on the value of their wares. Roman roads were an expression of efficiency and served as a reminder of empire's dominance.
