Absurdity (jan 1, 1901 – jan 31, 1910)

Description:

Both absurdity and experimentation can be seen as going hand in hand. Two worlds did quite a number on the authors of the modernist period and many sought to depict the absurdity of both wars. When the world seemed on the brink of losing its mind writers took up the pen to script outlandish plots and characters. A part of the absurdity of the modernist period was the use of transformations. In these stories a human character would find themselves in a different form than when they were first introduced. Whether the transformation was internal or external varied. Orlando can be thought of as a character that both physically and mentally changes throughout the story. She not only becomes a woman in appearance, but also has to be like one socially. The absurdity of course lies in Orlando’s body never aging like a regular human and somehow changing gender while sleeping.
