Experimentation (jan 30, 1910 – jan 31, 1920)
Description:
2. Experimentation. Writers of the modernist period loved to break tradition in their works. They would often break old writing styles or even mash together different styles to see what they would get. This led to the popularization of poets writing in free verse and not the traditional rhyme scheme. British novelists sought to defy reader expectations in there works. It included taking the past and seeing what it would be like if mixed with modern styled themes and languages. A form of narration born from these experiments is known as stream of consciousness, in which the point of view within a book is like the human thought process. Virginia Woolf is highly ranked among those who are well known as experimental modernist. Orlando’s character and plot of being a man who suddenly wakes as a woman and ages slowly can be seen as experimental with how outlandish it can often be to her readers.
