Ballet seen over a fan.
This perspective is due to the invention of photography in that time. The painting depicts (the twisted) reality as the dancers are girls from lower classes since the rich are socially not alowed to dance, the rich sponsor the poor. Although they are not dancing themselves, they are watching and sponsoring which is kind of contradictory.
