Arrested; tried and sentenced to death for high treason
Increasingly became a religious zealot and claimed to have mystic visions
Suffered from mental illness

Composed for Canada’s centennial celebrations in 1967
Libretto features four languages: English, French, Cree and Latin
Curious choice of subject matter to celebrate a national anniversary: the arrest and trial of an aboriginal leader who is ultimately executed for treason.
