Became a star composer with the success of his opera, Nabucco in 1842.
Wrote 26 operas, including Rigoletto, Il trovatore, La traviata, Aida, Otello, and Falstaff.
Known for his ability to “capture character, feeling and situation in memorable melodies” (from A History of Western Music, p. 702)
