Description:
Old English, the language used in Beowulf, was a Germanic language used by the Anglo-Saxons before the Conquest of 1066. English became the language of the lower class, while the upper, Norman, class used Norman French. English as it was before slowly evolved, adopting French words and rules, before becoming the dominant language in the country, and the language we use today in about the 15th century. Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales was written in Middle English in the late 14th century.
