Yalta Conference (feb 4, 1945 – feb 11, 1945)

Description:

On February 4, 1945, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin had a conference at the Black Sea resort of Yalta. During the meeting, the men agreed to command Germany's complete surrender and started plans for a post-war world (Editors, History.com. “Yalta Conference.” History.com, A&E Television Networks, 29 Oct. 2009, www.history.com/topics/world-war-ii/yalta-conference.). Stalin also agreed to allow free elections in Eastern Europe and enter the war against Japan, where he was assured to receive back lands lost to Japan in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905 (Editors, History.com. “Yalta Conference.” History.com, A&E Television Networks, 29 Oct. 2009, www.history.com/topics/world-war-ii/yalta-conference.). The leaders also came to an agreement to set up in Germany's four zones of occupation, which were controlled by their three countries and France. However, Stalin later broke his promise of allowing free elections and instead established Soviet Union controlled governments. This led to great controversy and many blamed Roosevelt for “selling out” to the soviets.
