Description:
The First World War occurred as a result of European countries competing for power and global influence. The main combatants were the Allied Power (US, Britain, France, Russia) vs. the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire). As a result of alliances, the majority of the countries in Europe were pulled into the war. The war was a total war, in which all countries devoted everything to the war effort. Much of the war was spent in stalemate, despite the record levels of death and destruction caused by trench warfare and new technology. The war ended with Allied victory and a realignment of Europe, however the harsh conditions they imposed on Germany during the Treaty of Versailles ultimately led to the Second World War.Added to timeline:
