End of the War in Europe (feb 4, 1945 – may 8, 1945)
Description:
After the end of the German advances known as the Battle of the Bulge, allied troops closed in on Germany from all sides and made the end of the war an in-reach goal.
- Yalta Conference: Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin met in the Soviet Union between February 4-11 of 1945 to discuss the end of the war. They decided that Germany would be split into 4 sectors, with one sector each controlled by the U.S., Great Britain, the Soviet Union, and France.
- The Western and Eastern fronts unite - The allied forces on the Western front began crossing the Rhine river and moving deep into Germany between March 23 - April 29 of 1945. The Soviet troops coming from the East were given the task of pushing into and taking Berlin. Knowing defeat was imminent, Hitler committed suicide on the 30 of April.
- On May 2 of 1945, Berlin officially surrendered, and on May 8 all German troops were ordered to cease-fire, effectively ending the war in the Western theater.
