Indochina War (dec 19, 1946 – aug 1, 1954)

Description:

Having had control of the Indochinese Peninsula before the second world war, France was keen to re-establish its control over Indochina after Japanese occupation to increase national pride but there was fierce opposition from anti-French rebels - primarily the Viet Minh under Ho Chi Minh (supplied by China and the USSR). France, with 75% US financing, suffered many casualties fighting against guerrilla warfare in the jungles. After heavy defeat at the battle of Dien Bien, the French went into the Geneva conference essentially defeated at thus there ended the war.
