Description:
The land along the north side of Union Bay is utilized by Coast Salish people. One village, called SWAH-tsoo-gweel, meaning ‘portage’, comprised five longhouses. This was the primary village of the hloo-weelh-AHBSH, a group part of the Duwamish tribe. The second village was a few miles to the northwest along Wolf Bay. Called TLEHLS, meaning ‘minnows’ or ‘shiners’, there was one longhouse here and it was also likely used by the hloo-weelh- AHBSH. The exact locations of these villages is not shared, due to the possibility of vandalism or trespass.
