Presidency of de la Madrid (dec 1, 1982 – nov 30, 1988)
Description:
The 52nd president of Mexico, Madrid began a long line of market-oriented presidents by implementing huge neoliberal economic policies in Mexico. His reforms encouraged foreign investment, privatization of previously state run industries, and reduction of tariffs. His administration faced heavy criticism, however, for its poor handling of the 1985 Mexico City Earthquake and the electoral fraud accusations of the 1988 election.
