A member of the PRI, his actions as governor for the State of Mexico gave him the momentum he needed to take office away from the PAN and put the PRI back in the presidential office. Although successful as a governor, his presidential career was characterized by his inability to crack down on drug violence as well as the escape of El Chapo.
