Mormon (sep 21, 310 – jul 30, 389)

Description:

Mormon was a great prophet and the last Chief Captain of the Nephites. His father was also named Mormon, and he tells us that they were named after the waters in which Alma the Elder performed baptisms.
Mormon is described as a sober and observant child, and for this reason he is entrusted with the sacred records by Ammaron.

At the age of 15 he was visited by God, and at the age of 16 was appointed the Chief Captain of the Nephite armies. He was large of stature, and obviously strong for his age, which seems to be the primary reasons for him being chosen.
He led the people and was faithful to his post.
But, when the people began to glory in their own strength he refused to lead them for a time. He eventually returned to his position and led the armies until their final destruction at Cumorah.

He lived a long life, filled with many sorrows. Though there were few left among the Nephites who were faithful to the truth, it would be a mistake to think that Mormon was lone in his faith. He did have the comfort of his son'son, Moroni's, faithfulness, and would eventually entrust the sacred records and the last portions of his great work to his son.

As Ammaron gave him instructions concerning the record in 321, and he was 10 years old at the time, we know that Mormon was born in AD 311. The final battle of Cumorah was in AD 385, and since we know that Mormon survived that battle he had to have died some time afterwards.
I place his birth in 311, and his death in 390, making him 81 when he died.
