Trials of the Robbers (may 7, 21 – jan 1, 26)

Description:

All the robbers who had surrendered at the end of the war were put in prison. It seems that the people took some time for things to settle down before they began the trials. During these trials the Nephites remained in their gathering place. It seems that the trials took four years to complete, and given that thousands had been cast into prison, this is understandable.

These trials were quite unusual. As a preliminary procedure the Nephites went into the prisons and preached the gospel to the Robbers. After this they were offered a plea deal.
If they would repent of their sins and enter a covenant to uphold the peace of the people, they were set free without further trial.
However, those who refuse to repent or to enter into such a covenant were held for trial, stood before the judges and were convicted of their crimes, being punished according to the laws of the Nephites.
