Info Pugin (jan 1, 1812 – jan 1, 1812)

Description:

Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (1812-1852) was an English architect (he is famous for his pioneering role in the Gothic Revival style), designer, (political) artist and critic.
Pugin on art/architecture: Pugin dislikes the art, but for him more important the Architecture of ‘the present day’. He thinks it is mechanical/impersonal (which coheres with the industrial revolution) and has no artistic value, it lacks any form of character and feeling which the architecture of the earlier times (medieval) does have. Architecture is (just as other forms of art) degrading more and more and should get its’ beauty back. He argued, therefore, for the revival of the medieval Gothic style.
He believes that, by studying the feelings, spirit and talents of the earlier times, the ‘better days’ (in a specialised school),
art and architecture can be restored.

Famous architectural works:
1. House of Parliament, London.
2. House of Lords, London.
3. The northeast chapel of St. Giles Roman Catholic Church, Cheadle.
