Neoclaccicism (jun 16, 1806 – mar 11, 1894)

Description:

This movement draws inspiration from the classical antiquity. It dates from the mid 18th century Rome around the time Pompeii was rediscovered. Its popularity spread all over Europe due to a group of European art students who finished their Grand Tour and returned from italy to their home countries with newly rediscovered Greco-Roman ideals. This style depicted heroic figures of Ancient Greece/Rome and featured clean lines, accuracy and structure. In Neoclassicism the emphasis is put on ‘’archeological exactitude’’. In an early age, neoclassical painting suffered from a lack of ancient models of history painting. Neoclassicism in painting gained a new sense of direction with the succes of Jacques-Louis David's Oath of the Horatii in which he succeeded to combine an idealis style with drame and forcefulness (classical colouring, a bit of artificial lighting, staging of opera etc.). David is seen as the leader of French art at that time. One of his studens was Ingres, Delacroix 'enemy'.
