Info Jacques-Louis David (jan 1, 1748 – jan 1, 1748)

Description:

Jacques-Louis David was a French painter in the Neoclassical style. He was very interested in the events of his time (he was politically involved in the revolution for example). This shows in works like the painting of his murdered Jacobin friend Marat, in the drawing of Marie-Antoinette waiting to be beheaded and in the (propagandic) portrait of napoleon as well. He is a very clear example of how the role of the artist changed during and after the French Revolution: the artist got politically involved and therefore more independent, less in a traditional role. As an artist, he was particularly opposed to the French Royal Academy. His artistic style 'walked away' from the popular 'Rococo'. This artistic movement and style was characterised by the use of pastel colours, light-heartedness/wittiness, asymmetry, naturalism and shell-like forms. David, however, developped a classical way of painting, marked by austerity and severity which fitted to the moral climate of the final years of the Ancien Régime. David is seen as a preeminent painter of his era, his 'brand' can be described as: history paintings in Neoclassical style. By the end of the 18th century, the Rococo-style was largely replaced by Neoclassical art.
