Safavid Dynasty (jan 1, 1501 – jan 1, 1722)
Description:
The Safavid Dynasty was an empire in modern-day Iran that was founded by Shi’a Muslims. The Dynasty was believed to have Sufi origins, which set them apart from the Ottoman and Mughals. The state religion was Shi’a Islam, which resulted in the persecution and mass conversions of Sunnis. However, the citizens living in the Safavid Empire soon started to welcome Shi'ism and allowed the Dynasty to flourish, soon becoming very wealthy through trade. The Safavid Dynasty is very important because despite being surrounded by two other very large, majority-Sunni dynasties, the Safavids were able to uphold a flourishing empire. (4.3)
