Beginning in 1444, Prince Infante D. Henrique (“Henry the Navigator”) started selling African slaves in Portugal. Over time, the Portuguese formed a relationship with kingdoms on the west coast of Africa and began exporting Prisoners of War from countries like Ndongo.
