Muhammad Ali (Egypt) (jan 24, 1805 – jan 30, 1849)
Description:
Built up army (both mercenaries and recruitment) to preserve rule after seizing power. Removed tax farming in favor of direct taxation for more revenue. Wanted to grow military, build infra, and prioritize the cotton monopoly. Took great care to limit European contact and influence in economy, but gradually lost hold.
