Old Stone Age (jan 1, 450000 BC – jan 1, 10000 BC)
Description:
Human Colonization of Europe. In these prehistoric times, there were 4 great Ice Ages when much of the land was covered by thick ice sheets.
The last glaciation took place about 15,000 years ago.
From that time until as recently as 10,000 years ago human groups came and went as the climate dictated
Britain was joined to France by open grassland over what is now the English Channel.
At this time the British Isles would have been largely covered by vast tracts of forests. The people were hunter-gatherers and relied entirely on wild foods. They were nomads, hunting and gathering wild plants.
They used sharp stone tools and hand-axes to hunt and fish, but they did not yet domesticate, or tame, animals, such as the reindeer and horses which surrounded them.
The Old Stone Age people lived in small family groups of a dozen or so,they sheltered in caves, and in tents made from animal skin and they could make fires - which helped them to survive harsh conditions.
