Naram-Sin (jan 1, 2254 BC – dec 31, 2218 BC)
Description:
Reign of Naram-Sin, self-proclaimed God of Akkad and King of the Four Quarters. As a son of Manishtushu, he was a grandson of Sargon the Great.
Under Naram-Sin's rule, the Akkadian Empire reached its maximum extent and covered an estimated 800,000 square kilometres. It reached all the way to Cyprus in the Mediterranean Sea, and possibly as far as Crete. Over 35,000 lived in the capital city of Akkad at this time.
However, Naram-Sin soon found his lands under attack. Audacious raids by the Gutian people of the Zagros Mountains put an end to the empire's growth and began to spell its decline.
