Time of the "new" immigrant (jan 1, 1880 – jan 1, 1910)
Description:
During this time, a lot of immigrants (considered part of a new type of immigrant) moved to the US.
Characteristics of new immigrants:
- Italians, Greeks, Croats, Slovaks, Poles, and Russians
- poor and illiterate peasants who left autocratic countries (and thus were not used to democratic government systems)
- usually Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Russian Orthodox, or Jewish
- crowded into poor ethnic neighborhoods in big cities
- many were considered "birds or passage" --> they came to America to make enough money to go back to their homes with a better chance of succeeding and supporting their families
