Cuban Revolution (may 1, 1953 – jul 1, 1959)
Description:
On July 26, 1953, Fidel and Raul Castro led around 160 men in a unsuccessful raid on a Santiago army barracks. Fidel Castro had hoped that the attack would start a general uprising against Batista, but most of the attackers were killed and Castro and his brother Raúl were arrested and imprisoned. Castro fled to Mexico and organized Cuban exiles to invade Cuba. This also failed, but lead to the guerilla campaign against Batista.A group largely made up of students, launched a bloody and unsuccessful attack on the presidential palace. Later the government announced that anyone participating in the strike would be refused re-employment elsewhere. August 1, 1957, Batista suspended constitutional guarantees such as freedom of assembly and freedom of expression.Support for Batista melted away but the military remained loyal. He left Cuba and spent the rest of his life in Portugal. When Castro came into power, many people did not recognize the legitimacy of his government.
