CIVIL WAR #5: Battle Of Shenandoah (jul 20, 1861 – mar 20, 1865)

Description:

Shenandoah Valley campaigns were important military campaigns in a four-year struggle for control of the strategic Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, which ran roughly North and South between the Blue Ridge and the Allegheny Mountains. The South used the transportation advantages of the valley so effectively that it often became the “valley of humiliation” for the North. For most of the war, Confederate armies were able to move North through the valley and toward Washington, D.C., whereas Union armies advancing South found themselves pushed farther away from Richmond, the Confederate capital. The presence of a Confederate army in the Northern part of the Shenandoah Valley was often considered a sufficient menace to justify calling back Union troops from campaigns elsewhere to ensure the security of the capital. Late in the war, Union forces finally took undisputed control of the region; this was a huge success within the Civil War.
