Spanish American War (apr 21, 1898 – aug 13, 1898)

Description:

The Spanish American war originated from the oppressive Spanish colonization of Cuba. The USS Maine, a U.S. Naval ship sent to protect the Cubans, sank in a Cuban harbor for unexplained reasons. This event created a popular demand for American intervention in Cuba. The U.S. Congress issued a bill that declared Cuba’s right to independence and demanded the withdrawal of Spanish soldiers in Cuba. On April 24, Spain declared war on the United States. On the following day, the U.S. congress declared war on Spain retroactively. The war was pathetically one-sided in favor of the United States, winning battle after battle. After consecutive losses, Spain signed the Treaty of Paris which renounced independence back to Cuba and relinquished control of the Philippines to the United States for twenty million dollars.
