Helaman I (jun 5, 118 BC – dec 5, 57 BC)

Description:

Son of Alma the Younger, Helaman was a very righteous man.
He grew up during the time of his father's rebellion, and would have been just over 20 when the angel appeared to Alma and the sons of Mosiah. We are not told whether or not he engaged in his father's rebellion, but we are given to understand that his father's conversion also converted him.

He is first mentioned in connection with the mission to the Zoramites. He does not go on that mission, but is left in Zarahemla with Himni to take care of the church. He would have been in his early 40's at the time.

After his father was translated, Helaman became the High Priest and led the church. He instituted another reform and preached the gospel. He also took charge of the sacred records.

In the war with Amalakiah and his brother Ammoron, Helaman led the stripling warriors of the people of Ammon to victory in the western lands of the Nephites.
It was the year after this great war that he died.

Helaman died in the year 57, 39 years after Alma's conversion. We can estimate from this his age.
I place his age in the year 118, making him 61 when he died.
