Note that while this book was written 450 years later, the main historical events it covers are of this period. Also note that since no actual dates are given regarding these events, what I give here is an estimation based on information in the books of Omni and Mosiah.
The Words of Mormon were written by Mormon, and are likely a completely original work, unlike other portions that are abridgments of other records.
The book explains the process by which Mormon made the record that he made, and why he choose to include certain portions. He also adds some brief historical information that bridges the gap of time between Omni and Mosiah. As I mentioned, these historical bits are more in line of original commentary, such as appear in other places in the record.
