Omni (jul 8, 362 BC – jun 22, 135 BC)

Description:

The period of time covered in the book of Omni.

The Book of Omni is a unique book in the entire record. While it was contained on the small plates, and thus was not abridged by Mormon, it has five different authors who contributed to it. They are as follows:
1. Omni, the son of Jarom.
2. Amaron, the son of Omni.
3. Chemish, the son of Omni (brother of Amaron).
4. Abinadom, the son of Chemish.
5. Amaleki, the son of Abinadom.

Amaleki wrote the largest portion of the book, having written 19 of the 30 verses in the book. He also gives us the greatest historical detail, and it is him that tells us of the discovery of Zarahemla and the Mulekites.

Omni also covers the second longest period of time, with only 4th Nephi covering more. It begins shortly after the death of Jarom, and continues until just before the death of Amaleki, being around 225 years.

Final note: Omni is the last book from the Small Plates of Nephi. Up to this point in history the Small Plates were kept by the religious leaders of the people, while the Large Plates had been kept by the Kings. But as Amaleki had no children, he gave the plates to King Benjamin. From that point on all the records were kept by a single person, starting with the kings, then the judges, than back to the religious leaders, until Mormon received them
