King Alfred (oct 29, 849 – jan 29, 899)
Description:
King of Wessex.
He was very influential. He could read and write which was an exception for a king at the time. Alfred wanted to uplift the knowledge & education of his people and took measures. This education was in English.
- He ordered to translate multiple works such as Bede's Ecclesiastical History.
- Began Anglo-Saxon Chronicles (every year's important events).
- Standardisation of spelling: Mercian, Northumbrian, Kentish & West-Saxon.
- Major factor in the establishment of English in the 11th C.
