High Slave Trade Participation (oct 16, 1660 – jun 16, 1807)
Description:
Slave trade starts to become more popular in 1640.
Slave trading becomes especially busy after 1660, when legislation (acts, charters) supported greater participation in the slave trade in West Africa.
Between 1660 and 1698, the slave trade was increasingly monopolized by a select few until illegal Dutch traders and unhappy planters pushed lawmakers to break up the monopoly.
However, by 1698 England had already become a leader of the slave trade and would remain so until slavery was outlawed in 1807.
